One of the classics starring the great Gregory Peck. I saw this as a child and read the book 40 years later, so I can't really comment on how one compares to the other; but I remember the movie as being wonderful. If I recall it even adheres to the point that Cpt. Ahab is not on deck when they first set sail - which is a critical point to really understanding the meaning of his quest. He is injured and has lost his immortality and must kill the whale! It's not about his missing leg.. it's about the fact that he can no longer father a child with his bride (yes.. he was married). Even the movie summary gets it wrong. It's not about his leg !!!! People on ships suffered amputations all the time. Read the book.

Thumbs up.

Summary from IMDB

This classic story by Herman Melville revolves around Captain Ahab and his obsession with a huge whale, Moby Dick. The whale caused the loss of Ahab's leg years before, leaving Ahab to stomp the boards of his ship on a peg leg. Ahab is so crazed by his desire to kill the whale, that he is prepared to sacrifice everything, including his life, the lives of his crew members, and even his ship to find and destroy his nemesis, Moby Dick.
